🍲 The 4 types of soup
Every soup in 4 words!
Hey soup enthusiast,
Welcome to the latest newsletter! I’m shaking things up a bit, and I hope you enjoy the new content. Let me know if you're hungry for more content like this!
In just a few moments we will explore the the different types of soup which are mostly bundled into four categories:
🍜 Thin
🥣 Thick
❄️ Cold
🌍 International
Lets take a look at each category of soup.

🍜 Thin Soups
Thin soups are as you would expect, thin. They are light soups which have no thickening agent in them making the soup thin or runny. A well made thin soup should priorities flavor and never taste watery. Thin soups can be made up of only the liquid or have a few light ingredients such as vegetables. Me and my family usually prefer thin soups for a lunch or starter in the summer.
Thin soups can be further categorised into:
Clear soups
Clear soups are thin soups were any chunks of ingredients are removed leaving only the liquid.
Broth and stock
Broth and stock involve simmering bones, meat, fish, mushrooms, or vegetables in water for an extended period. This process also extracts gelatin from animal-based ingredients, thickening and flavoring the liquid. Afterward, the ingredients are taken out, leaving a flavorful stock or broth. Broth is made using only meat or seafood, while stock is made using bones and meat trimmings.
Consommé
Consommé is where ground meat is mixed with a combination of carrots, celery, onion, tomato and most importantly eggs, then added to a stock or broth. Once the mixture has been sieved and the fat skimmed off the top, it leaves a clear and aromatic consommé.
Chunky soups
Chunky soups use a base of broth or stock and the edible ingredients left in or added such as the meat, vegetables, rice, potatoes and mushrooms. A great example is vegetable soup. Meals such as noodles, Raman and many other soup based meals fall into this category.
🥣 Thick soups
Thick soups stand out for their hearty texture which is achieved through thickening ingredients such as flour, corn-starch, cream, vegetables, gelatins, rice or potatoes. This category is my personal favorite. They may be creamy or chunky and they often have a lot of ingredients within them making them filling and perfect for winter or a main course. A great example is butternut squash soup.
❄️ Cold soup
Served at a cool temperature, cold soups are popular in warmer countries due to their refreshing and cooling properties.
🌍 International
International soup are soups which were created to represent different regions and countries around the world. For example, French onion soup is from France and Cullen Skink from Scotland.
